Abstract

This session introduces a convergence framework for integrating cyberGIS education and research on the I-GUIDE Platform. The I-GUIDE Platform provides rich geospatial data and computing resources and adheres to FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data principles. The framework enhances these capabilities by harnessing scalable and reproducible geospatial analytics. Specifically, this framework supports the development of interactive cyberGIS education and research Jupyter Notebooks centered around geospatial datasets. A case study demonstrates the application of the framework, showing six cyberGIS research notebooks and four cyberGIS education notebooks based on a Twitter dataset. The case study and underlying framework highlight the potential of integrating cyberGIS research and education by making standardized datasets, interactive learning environments, and high-performance computing resources available on I-GUIDE Platform.

Dr. Fangzheng Lyu is an assistant professor in the Department of Geography at Virginia Tech. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography, an M.S. in Geography from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a B.E. in Computer Engineering from the University of Hong Kong. His research interests lies in advancing GIScience, Geospatial Data Science and Computational Science to tackle complex geospatial problems and understand multi-scale urban dynamics using heterogeneous geospatial big data. Specifically, him research aims to 1) leverage geospatial data science for understanding multi-scale urban dynamics; 2) develop scalable spatial algorithms for solving complex geospatial problems; and 3) democratize cyberGIS for data-intensive geographic research. Dr. Lyu is currently serving as Vice Chair for American Association of Geographers Cyberinfrastructure Specialty Group.
