Abstract

An important aspect of meteorology and the study of the weather is its near-constant impact on our lives, which necessitates access to a wide array of data and products on a real-time basis. This drives the development of tools that simplify and facilitate the ability to work with this information readily. This session uses a Python-based library, MetPy, to work with real-time satellite data and severe weather forecast products to build a visualization of the current weather using MetPy’s so-called “simplified plotting interface.

Ryan May is the deputy director for the Unidata program, part of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) Community Programs. His background is in weather radar signal processing and algorithm development, having received his Ph.D. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma in 2014. Ryan is the creator and lead developer for the MetPy project and is a passionate advocate for using Python to simplify data analysis in the atmospheric sciences.

Drew Camron has worked at Unidata since 2020, primarily on Python development, education, and community building.
