Creating Spatial Data Infrastructure that Supports the Development and Evaluation of Policy

Abstract

Geospatial data and technologies are now critical parts of the U.S. policy making and policy evaluation process. Following significant investments in the development of geospatial data standards, shared service platforms, and partnership programs, federal agencies are now well-positioned to expand the use geospatial data and geospatial analysis in evidence-based policy making. However, in many agencies an explicitly geographic approach to program development and evaluation is still emerging. Focusing on federal program evaluation, this presentation will outline how adopting a geographic perspective on evidence can improve policy outcomes and identify points of entry within the existing policy landscape to foster change.

Dr. Peter Kedron is an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of California Santa Barbara and Associate Director of the Center for Spatial Studies and Data Science. He develops analytical methods, research approaches, and pedagogical models to build a reproducible and reliable spatial data science. His recent research focuses on bringing a geographic approach to understanding not only what policies work, but what policies work where.
