Building Spatial Workflows with Open Data in R

October 1, 2025 11:00 am (Central Time)

Abstract

This virtual consulting office session will introduce participants to the process of accessing and incorporating open spatial and social science data into reproducible analysis workflows using R. The session will include a practical demonstration using notebooks from the R Spatial Notebooks series on the I-GUIDE Platform and will walk through the data acquisition and management process with multiple examples, including IPUMS, Natural Earth, OSM, and other public datasets. Participants will learn about key open data sources they can use in their work and how to connect to open data APIs, read and transform common spatial and tabular data formats, and integrate open data into social science analyses workflows in R.
