Geospatial computing combines computational and spatial thinking to enable spatiotemporal models and methods to use advanced computing resources such as high-performance and cloud computing. Situated at the intersection of geographic information science and computational science, geospatial computing focuses on addressing the computational challenges that underlie geospatial problems, such as designing optimal algorithms, building effective workflows, and even developing geospatial programming languages. A key challenge in geospatial computing is scaling computation to process massive geospatial data coming from satellites, sensors, or social media.
